The Gilmore Girls as the Four Queens

I adore Gilmore Girls. It’s is witty, timeless and full of fast talking, beautiful women and – really – what is better than that?

I have watched the series all the way through several times. I like to think of myself as a Lorelei, but I know I am a Rory at heart.

As I watch these women and they teach me things about life and growing up I realize that I am looking at the representations of the four Queens from tarot lovingly and exquisitely depicted.

Lorelei as the Queen of Wands:

Lorelei is stubborn, passionate, creative and full of life. She reacts with her gut to every situation and, although her head can take the backseat in the decision making process, her heart is always in the right place. She is witty and caring and protective. She can be unlucky (or lucky depending on your perspective) in love. Her life is often full of wonderful and exciting men, but she often falls in love too hard and too fast. Sexy, confident and strong – she owns the fire power that she has without question. It could be easy to see Lorelei as a queen of Cups because she feels things more deeply than any of the other Gilmore women. But these feelings pass through her sense of her passion rather than her heart. In other words, she may say something particularly nasty in her anger rather than think about the other person’s feelings in the situation.

Rory as the Queen of Cups:

Sweet, innocent, smart and a heart of gold – Rory is kind of like Bambi in human form. She is a Disney princess come to life. She is ambitious and incredibly smart, so you might think she would make a great queen of swords, but I don’t believe that is who she is at her core. She is kind and she isn’t calculating. And even at her worst, she would never cut down someone else to get ahead. In fact, when she poo does hit the fan, Rory retreats in true watery fashion. She pulls away from everything and goes within to heal. She is deep and thoughtful in a way that few people are.

Emily as the Queen of Swords and the Queen of Pentacles:

I couldn’t pick one for Emily. As soon as I had her pegged for a Queen of Swords, her pentacle nature would come out. She is classy, sharp and savvy. Wherever you are in your planning, Emily Gilmore is three steps ahead. She hardly ever engages in something without a definite end in mind. Although financially generous, Emily almost always has strings attached or some other ulterior motive. She runs her empire with astute perfection and professionalism. You will never catch Emily Gilmore with her pants around her ankles. Even in her rants and rages, she remains more together than me on my best day. She is worldly and wise. She is hardly played for a fool and if you are wily enough to pull the wool over her eyes, you will pay dearly for it. She rules her kingdom with impossible standards and poised power.

Each one of these queens is present within each of us. We can tap into each of them to achieve different ends in our lives. The ultimate seat of power is in perfect balance between each queen, allowing her special power and secret magic to work for you in her own way.

Blessed be. xoxox
