The 6 of Cups & Letting Yourself be Happy

How hard is it to let yourself be happy? It seems like it should be the easiest thing in the world. Joy is our natural state. We are meant to be happy, content and excited for the future. So why does it feel so difficult sometimes?

We all have a subconscious trigger that tells us when we have received enough goodness. This is called your "havingness level". Our Havingness level directly corresponds to how much joy, love, abundance, money and/or happiness we allow ourselves to have before we subconsciously say "that's enough!". For me, the trigger came in the form of guilt. Thoughts like "I don't deserve this" or "they shouldn't make a fuss over me" or "why should I be so lucky" would pop up the moment I felt like things were getting "too good".
Of course, my havingness level is a result of childhood programming & linger effects of emotional abuse. Your havigness level may be based on other factors & everyone is different. The truth is that our havingness level shouldn't exist. We should allow ourselves to graciously accept all the beautiful, wonderful, abundant blessings that find their ways into our lives. There is no limit to the goodness we are allowed to receive.

That is what the 6 of Cups teaches us. There was a time in our lives, remembered or not, when we were so joyous in every moment. We did what made us happy & we never thought there was a limit on these things. We all need to lighten up! Life is supposed to be fun and we are supposed to be happy in the living of it. Of course there will be moments, even long moments, which won't be easy - but we are meant to return to joy between these moments.
Let yourself be happy. It isn't about forcing a smile on your face but rather about simply getting out of your own way. Do things for yourself, big or small, that make you feel good. And when you get in that good-feeling place, allow yourself to stay there. If dark thoughts come cropping up, turn from them and refocus on a thought that feels better. Make joy your job.
Journal Prompts:
1. What is your havingness level? What do you feel when you reach your havingness level? What thoughts creep up when good things happen for you?
2. Write about your responses to the phrase "I deserve this". What about the phrase "I want this".
3. Do you feel the need to justify everything you desire? Everything you get? Being in a good mood? Why? Make a plan to catch yourself in this pattern & choose a new path.
4. What would your life look like it you allowed yourself to have everything you wanted?
