A Psycho-Spiritual Look at the Moon

The Moon has always been a point of wonder for the people of Earth. She looms above us, pale and beautiful and ever-changing. In ancient times She was seen as a Goddess, Lover of the Sun. Later we learned that she is much more than just Earth's satellite and the Sun's counterpart - she controls the tides.

Psycho-Spirituality is relatively new (I only know a few people who practice it) but it has become a central pillar of my spiritual practice. The idea that things we once thought were "occult" or "New Age Nonsense" are anything but. Psycho-spirituality is where the woo-woo nature of spirituality and the rational nature of science meet and it is a powerful place for healing.
When I read tarot, I do so from a psycho-spiritual standpoint. To me, Meyers Briggs Types are just the same as the Zodiac signs because I understand the connection between both systems. The Moon has been a pillar in spiritual practices from many different traditions and her light can illuminate the psycho-spiritual path as well.
The Moon is cyclical in nature, much like our own lives are cyclical. Not only does the Moon cycle follow the same 28 day rotation as a woman's menstral cycle, but we have emotional, physical and mental cycles as well. Although the later cycles are not confined to a 28 day rotation, the Moon helps us to tap into our cyclical nature - embrace it - and use it to improve the quality of our lives.

There are times when we have more energy & times when we have less. Times when we are focused without and times when we are focused within. Sometimes we are productive and other times we are receptive. Sometimes our relationships are blossoming and other times they are stagnating. It is easy to feel down or beat ourselves up when things aren't going the way we want. We can become pessimistic and wonder why we aren't doing as much as we did last week. Where did all that productive energy go? Why are my partner and I fighting all the time when just last week we were fine? It is all part of the cyclical nature of our own psyches.
We are spiritual beings having a human experience. We come to this planet to have contrasting experiences so we can expand, grow and become more than we ever thought we could be. It is this same logic that translates to our relationships. We must go through periods of fighting so we can deal with issues that would stand in the way of true connection.
How can the Moon help with this? Here are a few ways:
Full Moon: Gratitude and Releasing.

The Full Moon is a great time to look at the abundance in your life & find the positive aspects of troublesome situations. I am reminded of one of my favorite movie characters, Jack Sparrow, when he said "The problem is not the problem. The problem is your attitude about the problem". Sometimes a change in perspective can be a game changer. Look for areas in your life where you can clear debris and make space. Maybe you literally need to get rid of some physical stuff or maybe you need to strip a relationship back to basics. Maybe you need to reassess your healing journey. Take stock of what is working and what isn't. Write in your gratitude journal and look ahead toward a new path.
Waxing Moon: Banishing.

Out with the old, in with the new. The Waxing Moon reminds us that when we cut away something we make room for something new - something better. What is no longer serving you? What thought patterns and habits have you been holding onto becuase "that is the way things have always been done"? What would feel so great to just let go of? Let go of it. Clear it out. Spend time in the quiet. Relax. Spend time medidating and doing yoga. Let words like "flow" and "ease" and "clear" inspire you. Sink into what is and think about how you would like things to be.
New Moon: Intention and Planning.

Now that you have used the Waning Moon to figure out what feels good and what doesn't, make a plan. Use this time to set intention for the next Moon cycle. What would you like to accomplish by the next New Moon? How can you bring more of what satisfies and fulfills you into your life? What can you do to build yourself up and make yourself happy? Get really clear about what it is you want and make a plan to bring it into your reality.
Waning Moon: Building.

Now it is time to build your empire! Follow the plan you have made. Do something everyday to get you to your goal. Don't worry if there are setbacks, just keep going. Look for new ways to be inspired. Spend time in the world of family and friends. Make this process as fun and fulfilling as possible Every step you make is a step in the right direction.
I have been following this model for a while in my personal life and I have enjoyed the freedom and the structure it has brought me. I hope it can bring you as much clarity as it has brought me!
